Statistics show that just 4% of Americans have an emergency kit and just 11% have an emergency plan!
- Develop an emergency communications and disaster plan with your family
- Establish an out-of-area friend or relative as a single point of contact to coordinate family messages
- Determine meeting places and escape routes for you and your family if you become separated
- Create an emergency contact list of family and friends, including fire, police, and hospitals
- Prepare a disaster-supplies kit to sustain your family for three to seven days. Also prepare kits for your work and car
- Items for kits include water, food, flashlight, batteries, a battery-powered radio, first-aid kit and medicines, a change of clothing, extra keys, duct tape, plastic sheeting and important documents
- Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to local law enforcement
- Continue normal activities but be aware of your surroundings
