Fire Hydrant Ordinance
Section 508.6.8 Fire hydrant obstruction:
It shall be unlawful for any person, persons, firm, partnership or corporation to damage, deface obstruct, obscure from view or restrict access to any fire hydrant whether the same is located on a public way, public or private lands.
 
Section 508.6.9 Tampering with fire hydrant:
It shall be unlawful for any person to use or operate a fire hydrant for any purpose other than the suppression of a fire. This provision shall not apply to employees of the municipality or village, firefighters or employees of the public utility supplying water to the fire hydrant while in the performance of their duties as firefighters or employees.
 
Section 508.6.13 Color coding of fire hydrants:
All fire hydrants installed after the effective date of this ordinance shall be classified as follows:
  • Class AA – Flow of 1500 gallons per minute or greater.
  • Class A – Flow capacity of 1000-1500 gallons per minute.
  • Class B – Flow capacity of 500-1000 gallons per minute.
  • Class C – Flow capacity of less than 500 gallons per minute.
 
Furthermore, all fire hydrants installed shall be color coded as follows:
 
Section 508.6.14 Public hydrants:
 All barrels and caps shall be painted yellow (Porter Paint Co. enamel #4114 or equal) or silver (TNEMEC 43-36, 330 aluminum).
 
  • Class AA – Bonnet – blue (TNEMEC Series 74 Part A safety blue).
  • Class A – Bonnet – green (Porter #5-8-4V4140 or equal).
  • Class B – Bonnet – orange (Porter #4118 or equal).
  • Class C – Bonnet – red (Porter #4119 or equal)
 
Section 508.6.15 Private (yard) hydrants:
 Private hydrants shall be painted entirely red (Porter #4119 or equal) in order to be distinguished from public hydrants. The District may require the private hydrants to be color coded as public hydrants in some cases.
