How Do I Become A Firefighter?

Minimum Qualifications

  1. State Certified as FF II (NFPA 1001, 1992 Edition)
  2. Missouri State E.M.T. Certified
  3. High School Diploma or GED
  4. Due to the nature of our work you should not have any felony convictions .

How do I receive Firefighter I & II Certification?

The State of Missouri, through the Division of Public Safety, regulates and authorizes delivery of the standardized curriculum for Firefighter I & II. Who is approved to deliver the State approved Firefighter I & II program?

The St. Charles County Fire Academy has been approved by the State of Missouri to deliver the F.F. I & II program. . All Fire Districts and Fire Departments in St Charles, Lincoln and Jefferson counties will accept any State approved F.F. I & II program.

How do I enroll in the St Charles County Fire Academy?

You need to locate the fire department that protects your home or property. Contact that department and ask about sponsorship into the fire academy. Each department has different guidelines for sponsorship.

If your property is protected by Central County Fire & Rescue you should contact the Assistant Chief of Departmental and Professional Services about sponsorship. The phone number is 636-970-9700 Ext 402.

When does the St Charles County Fire Academy hold classes?

The Fire Academy usually starts in November. There will be an application period which will last one week. Contact the Assistant Chief of Departmental and Professional Services the last week of July for the application dates. If an application period has not been set at that time, you will be instructed on how to proceed at that time.

After your application has been completed it will be reviewed by the Fire Chief. He will forward the applications to the Board of Directors who will make the final determination as to who Central County Fire and Rescue will sponsor.

All applicants will be notified by mail as to the status of their application.

The successful candidate(s) will be notified to report to the Assistant Chief of Departmental and Professional Services for further instructions.

What is the cost to attend the Fire Academy?

The current cost is approximately $1000.00 Dollars which you will pay. This covers books uniform shirt and incidentals.

Are there other costs?

Upon successful notification of sponsorship into the academy you will need the following items not covered by your tuition:

Police Background check
Physical from your family physician
Navy blue pants (specific type)
Black belt (garrison)
Black boots.

How long does the Academy last?

The Academy meets Monday and Thursday evenings from 7 pm-10 pm, and approximately every other Saturday from 8 am – 5 pm. You are only allowed two (2) absences from class. No refunds. Graduation ceremonies are held in June.

Are there written exams?

There is a written exam each week to measure your mastery of each subject. To pass the class you are required to keep a minimum score as determined by the State for each written exam. In addition there will be skills tests, which are pass fail. You must pass the skills in order to progress in the class.

How do I receive EMT Certification?

EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician; you may contact the St. Charles County Ambulance District about their program costs and delivery. 636-441-1354 Their web site https://www.sccad.com/ click on education and that will take you to their SCCAD Academy.

There may also be other classes through other agencies available.

Completing the Fire Academy does not guarantee anyone a job. Once through the Fire Academy, then you will start your job search.
