On Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. firefighters from Central County Fire and Rescue delivered a new bike and helmet to a 12 year old girl who was struck by a vehicle while riding her bike. The location of the presentation will be at #9 Kirkwood Ct, St. Peters, MO 63376.
On March 30, 2009, Monique Holland, a 12 year old girl from St. Peters was on her way home from the store on her bike. She had always been told by her grandmother to cross Salt Lick Road at the cross walk near the fire station. On this warm sunny afternoon a change was made in her normal routine and she decided not to use the cross walk. A vehicle traveling on Salt Lick Road struck the young girl propelling her into the air landing on a vehicles hood and then to the ground. Monique suffered a broken leg and other scrapes to her body and face. But to her credit this 6th grader from Dubray Middle School was wearing her bike helmet that she had purchased from Central County Fire and Rescue firefighters when she was in the 2nd grade. This helmet saved her life, because if she had not been wearing it when her head struck the pavement, she most likely would have suffered major head trauma.
Each year firefighters from Central County Fire and Rescue attend fairs and other events at the elementary schools offering new bike helmets for only $5. Each helmet is carefully fitted to the child to ensure ultimate protection. Over the past three years 947 helmets have been distributed to children within the fire district.
