Life Saving Award Presented to Three CCFR Fire Fighters
Written by Assistant Chief Steve Brown

During the meeting of the Board of Directors of Central County Fire and Rescue on December 18, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. Life Saving Awards will be presented to Engineer Brian Bain, Firefighter Jason Meinershagen and Firefighter Brad Day.

At approximately 10:58 p.m. on August 15th of 2006 while the crew of 9514 was on scene investigating a motor vehicle fire in the first block of Four Winds Drive in St. Peters three adults walked up carrying a female child who was unresponsive and not breathing.

The crew lead by Acting Captain Jason Meinershagen immediately sprang into action, placing the child on the ground in front of the pumper and began assessing her condition.  It was determined that the 5 year old girl did not have a pulse and was not breathing.  Acting Captain Meinershagen contacted Fire Dispatch and advised that they had a pediatric code blue walk up and to send a medic unit.  CPR on the victim began immediately.  After four cycles of CPR the patient began breathing agonally on her own.  A re-assessment showed a strong pulse and but her breathing was very labored.  Engineer Bain and Firefighter Day continued with ventilations until the medic unit arrived.  In route to the hospital Engineer Bain drove the ambulance while Firefighter Day assisted the medics in the back of the ambulance.

Less than a month later the crew from 9514 was able to meet with the victim and grandmother and she was doing just fine.

For more information or if you have any questions please contact Assistant Chief Steve Brown at 636-262-9503.
