The nationwide emphasis this year for Fire Prevention Week is "Plan and Practice Your Home Escape Plan." National surveys indicate that only one-fifth to one-fourth of house-holds (23%) have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan to ensure they could escape quickly and safely. Do you have a plan?
One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life-threatening. The time available is often less. Only 8% said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out! How long would it take for your family to get out if there was a fire?
In 2005, there were an estimated 511,000 structure fires with 3,105 associated civilian deaths in the Unites States. All of the data begs the question; if the other 75% developed and practiced an escape plan, how many more lives would have been saved?
I am asking each person that reads this article to ask themselves the question, "If I have a fire tonight, will I get out safely?" You will have a far better chance of getting out safely if you have planed ahead. Develop a fire escape plan and practice it with the whole family. Everyone should know two ways out of each room and know where to meet outside. Make sure everyone understands that getting out is the first priority. And remember, once you are outside, stay out.
We at Central County Fire & Rescue place an extra effort on fire prevention activities during the month of October, however, fire prevnetion and safety should be a year rond priority for everyone.
