Firefighters to Demonstrate Potential Hazards and Proper Usage of Turkey Fryers
Written by Assistant Chief Steve Brown
Thursday, November 15 2007 21:48
On Friday, November 16, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at #1 Timberbrook Drive, St. Peters, firefighters with Central County Fire and Rescue will demonstrate the potential hazards of improperly cooking your Thanksgiving turkey in at turkey fryer.  This demonstration will be very graphic and show the explosive possibilities of frying a partially frozen turkey, using too much oil and leaving the fryer unattended.

 Turkey Fryer Fire
The following are the most common scenarios involving turkey fryers:

  • House fires associated with turkey fryers leading to injuries and property damage.
  • Ignition of oil used with turkey fryers. This was often related to oil reaching excess temperatures or oil contacting the open flame of the fryer.
  • Splashing of hot oil causing burns.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, "Thanksgiving Day fires in residential structures cause more property damage and claim more lives than residential structure fires on other days of the year."

The members of Central County Fire and Rescue want everyone to have a safe and happy Thanksgiving Day.  By showing the potential hazards of improper use of a turkey fryer we hope to prevent any unnecessary tragedy to your family.

For more information or questions, please contact Assistant Chief Steve Brown at 636-262-9503.
